Hey y'all!
I hope that have been having a relaxing holiday so far! Last week, I asked which grid posts y'all would like to see on my instagram and I decided that the polls that didn't win would end up on my blog! With pre-med and med school tips being split pretty evenly, I thought I'd share my medical school tips on my blog and pre-med tips on my insta!
As many of you know, I just finished my first semester of medical school so while I just got my feet wet in studying medicine, I feel like I can help shine some light on the first semester and what to be prepared for!
Studying is a marathon not a sprint. Everyone kept telling me this before I started and TBH, I didn't really pay much attention. I went to a rigorous high school and and even more demanding undergraduate institution. I'm used to studying so I figured med school wouldn't be that much different from undergrad. WOA. I was wrong. While the amount of work is probably the same compared to my time in undergrad, the biggest difference for me was that in med school i'm testing twice a week. In undergrad we would have exams every two - four weeks so my semester was pretty spread out. In medical school had two exams in ONE week, every week. Studying really is the definition of drinking out of a fire hydrant in medical school. My biggest tip is paying attention in class. There is almost little time to go back and relearn information, learn it in class and review during studying.
Make time for mental and physical health. Our classes would start at 9am so I would try and wake up around 7:30 to get a quick work out in. Now I didn't work out every day because I get lazy, but trying to work out two- three times a weeks really helped. I also made sure to take Friday nights off. After a long weeks of studying and exams, having Friday off was great to go into the city to explore or just have movie nights!
Don't compare yourself to others. It's so hard to do but you made it into medical school for a reason. Do the best you can, ask for help when you need it, but comparing yourself to others won't help you.
Become friends with older medical students! My school has a big-little system so I have second and third years bigs which is so helpful. They're honestly the best bigs ever and made me feel so incredibly welcome as I transitioned to medical school. Additionally it's great to get an older medicals student's perceptive on first and their advice.
Notability is your best friend if you like handwritten notes!
Make time for your friends especially those not in medical school. It's so refreshing to talk to people who aren't talking about exams or histology LOL. It's just nice to know there's life outside of medical school. It also help you vicariously live through them as you study LOL
Make sure you have the right gadgets and gizmos for medical school! Invest in quality electronics because most of your time will be spent studying and looking at screens. Click on the image below to shop all my recommended products for medical school!
Peace and Love,
